Few aspects of the job can produce as many sleepless nights for a fleet manager as the issue of safety. Whether it's monitoring employee motor vehicle records or combating distracted driving through comprehensive safety policies, fleet management and safety go hand in hand. Attendees to NAFA Fleet Management Association's 2013 Institute & Expo (I&E) will have the opportunity to listen to a true safety expert – Janet Froetscher, the President & CEO of the National Safety Council – who will close out the final day of the 2013 I&E with a keynote presentation in the morning.

Under Ms. Froetscher's leadership, the National Safety Council has focused on key safety initiatives, grounded in science, to advance its mission of preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads. These initiatives include the creation of the Journey to Safety Excellence approach to workplace safety that promotes continuous improvement of leadership and performance measurement. Ms. Froetscher has also led the Council in taking a leadership role on the issues of distracted and teen driving.

The National Safety Council was the first organization to call for a national ban on cell phone use while driving; has driven 34 states to pass texting laws; and has encouraged corporations to adopt corporate cell phone bans. The Council has also been successful in advocating for better graduated driving license requirements for teen drivers and in promoting education for parents of teen drivers.

"NAFA is thrilled to have Janet Froetscher speak before our membership," said NAFA's Executive Director, Phillip E. Russo, CAE. "Ms. Froetscher's impressive body of work was recognized by our Association last year when she was named as one of the initial inductees of NAFA's Safety Leadership Award. She is an authority on a subject that is of great importance to every fleet manager."

Prior to joining the National Safety Council, Ms. Froetscher served as Chief Executive Officer of the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and Chief Operating Officer of the Aspen Institute. Her corporate experience includes leadership roles within the Commercial Club of Chicago and Bankers Trust Company. She holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Virginia and a MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Safe driving is essential to the fleet managers who belong to NAFA, a group that collectively manages several million vehicles travelling on North American roads each day. The Association has supported the "Drive Safely Work Week" campaign by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety for several years and created its own Safety Advisory Council in 2011. The Council's mission is to ensure that safety remains on the forefront of the Association via articles in NAFA publications and is regularly included in products and services.

NAFA's 2013 Institute & Expo will take place April 23-26 in Atlantic City, the first time in a decade it has been held in the northeast. The conference features powerful keynote presentations to kick off each day, followed by more than 60 hours of fleet educational sessions, an expo with the latest products and services, and plenty of opportunities to network with the best and brightest in fleet management.
