More than 1,200 Freightliner and Western Star trucks recalled for tie-rod issue

Aug. 29, 2018
Vibrations may lead to tie-rod separation and an inability to steer.

More than 1,200 Freightliner and Western Star trucks are being recalled for an increased risk of tie-rod separate which could reduce the ability to steer.

Trucks included in the recall are model year 2012-2015:

  • Freightliner 114SD
  • Freightliner Business Class M2
  • Freightliner Cascadia
  • Freightliner Coronado
  • Western Star 4900

In certain circumstances, high brake vibrations may occur due to a combination of front axle, brake lining and brake spider. These vibrations may lead to a reduced fatigue life of the tie-rod tube, particularly if the component is subject to corrosion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Safety recall report.

Separation of the tie-rod may lead to a disconnect between the front wheels of the vehicle and reduce the ability to steer the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Affected customers will be notified by mail, and Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will then replace brake linings, brake spider and tie-rods as needed.
