Ask the Expert: Why are my DPF cleanings being required more often?

June 11, 2015
There are several things that may cause a DPF to plug faster than normal.

Q: Why are my DPF cleanings being required more often?

A: There are several things that may cause a DPF to plug faster than normal:

  • One common issue is the amount of idle time. Most filter systems require a certain average temperature while operating to maintain the regeneration process. If not met, the filter will fill up at an accelerated rate. In some cases, like cold climates, idling is necessary to keep the truck warm while waiting for loads or such. Products like a Webasto heater are specifically designed for this scenario.
  • Another easily overlooked cause of DPF plugging is the engine’s air filter. As the air filter gets dirty, the engine will not get the amount of air it needs via the intake. This will cause an over fueling situation and change the soot output of the engine, prematurely plugging the DPF.
  • Engine condition is the most common reason for DPF plugging. In the “old days,” you would notice smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe and know you needed some engine maintenance.  Now, the DPF on your truck is filtering out that smoke. Therefore, engine condition must be monitored more proactively. An opacity test should be performed at each cleaning interval to ensure the engine is at a safe level for the DPF. If not, maintenance is required to return the engine to its intended level.
