DTNA standardizes SAF-Holland fifth wheels on Freightliner, Western Star tractors

Jan. 9, 2024
The standardization is applicable for all moderate and severe-duty applications on Freightliner and Western Star tractors.

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) recently standardized SAF-Holland’s fifth wheels for all moderate and severe-duty applications on Freightliner and Western Star tractors.

The standard-position, severe-duty model is the FW70 fifth wheel with a 24" sliding mount configuration, 70,000-lb. vertical load rating, and 20,000-lb. maximum drawbar pull, SAF-Holland reported. The moderate-duty standard is the FW35 in a 12" sliding mount setup. The FW35 boasts a 55,000-lb. vertical loading rating and the TwinLock jaw mechanism.

“Our strengthened DTNA partnership and this standard positioning opportunity will greatly benefit extra-duty fleet customers,” said Jason Cantu, SAF-Holland fifth wheel product manager, in a news release.

The versatile FW35 fifth wheel is rated for multiple applications and available in a variety of non-standard position models, including the FW33 LowLube. Option requests include air release for in-cab lock release, and, for the highest level of fleet safety, the Electronic Lock Indicator-technology enhanced (ELI-te) coupling system, which is designed to assist the driver with a successful coupling “time after time,” SAF-Holland said.

The FW35 and FW70 also are available with the optional NoTilt, and the Kompensator mounting bracket, in both stationary and sliding mounting systems.
