The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has scheduled 2024’s Brake Safety Week event for August 24-31. During this week, the Alliance will focus on vehicle and driver safety inspections geared towards brake safety. Additionally, brake safety and violation data will be collected for eventual release to the public.
Throughout the week, CVSA-certified inspectors will hold routine inspections and remove vehicles with brake-related out-of-service violations. Vehicles will be able to travel again once the violation is corrected. In particular, this year’s Brake Safety Week will focus on brake lining and pad condition, and some jurisdictions may hold performance-based brake tests.

To prepare for the event, law enforcement agencies, transportation safety organizations, and individual officers will be reaching out to ensure the transportation industry is informed about brake safety. The CVSA has also released some educational materials, including details on the airbrake inspection procedure and the items that will be inspected, such as the driver’s license, low-air warning device, pushrod travel, and tractor protection system. An S-Cam brake inspection checklist, component glossary, and flyer for tips to maintain brake lining and pads is also available.
Meanwhile, the data from these inspections, such as violation counts, lining and pad health, and performance-based brake tests will be reported to the CVSA. Results from this data will be released later this year, the Alliance stated in a press release.
