Tractor-trailer wheel-off results in death of SCDOT surveyor
A South Carolina wheel-off incident on February 18 has resulted in the death of 24-year-old Jerad Rose, a surveyor for the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
According to a local news outlet, Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the tire came off of a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer and struck Rose as he was performing his duties along U.S. 15 in Dorchester County. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said:
“Today’s tragedy is yet another reminder of the danger our front line workers face as they work to improve the lives of South Carolinians. Jerad’s memory and his sacrifice in service to our state will not be forgotten. This is a tremendous loss and I would ask all of you to join us in lifting up his family, friends and colleagues in your prayers tonight.”
A release from the SCDOT noted that employees observed a moment of silence and he will also be honored and recognized at the annual workers memorial service in April.
While the incident is still under investigation, it highlights the need for proper wheel-end maintenance.
These are some actionable steps you can take to ensure your drivers and everyone else on the road stay safe:
- Implement strict pre- and post-trip inspections
- Regularly monitor wheel-end temperature
- Start using electronic DVIRs
