March 14, 2014
The milestone truck was purchased by Averitt Express, a transportation and logistics company based in Nashville, Tenn.

Volvo's Remote Diagnostics, a telematics solution that enables quick diagnosis of issues, proactive scheduling for repairs and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job, said Conal Deedy, Volvo Truck’s product marketing manager for electronics and communications.

The solution, which is fully integrated into the truck when manufactured, comes standard with every Volvo truck.

When a diagnostic trouble code is trigger, an automatic alert to is sent to the Volvo’s 24/7 Uptime Center, which is staffed by trained support specialists. Upon receiving the notification and while the driver continues working, the support specialists immediately evaluates the situation.

A case is opened in the ASSIT web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet service manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customer-chosen dealer, he said. This can be at a Volvo dealership or where ever else the customer decides.

This process includes verification that a bay and the necessary parts are available, and repair instructions are sent electronically repair instructions.

The end result is that technicians are fully prepared when the truck arrives, getting the customer back on the road faster, noted Deedy.

From the experiences with the ASIST Remote Diagnostics-equipped trucks in the field since the telematics solution was introduced two years ago, he said that there has been a 70 percent reduction in diagnostic time to figure out what is wrong with a truck and a 20 percent reduction in repair time.

Remote Diagnostics and ASIST work together with Volvo Action Service – a 24/7 roadside support program.

Volvo Action Service offers round-the-clock roadside assistance to drivers anywhere in Canada and the United States. When a driver notifies Volvo Action Service, highly trained and knowledgeable staff members work to resolve issues.

Their goal is to maximize truck uptime by quickly scheduling and managing service, repairs or any other issues out on the road.

Volvo Action Service stays on the case until it is resolved to the customer's satisfaction.
