U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has named Vinn White as deputy administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). In his new role, White will also serve as the agency’s Acting Administrator.
“It is an honor to take on this role, and I thank Secretary Buttigieg for his trust and confidence in my ability to lead the important work of FMCSA,” said White. “Our agency is focused on enhancing safety for all roadway users, and I am committed to working with safety partners across the commercial motor vehicle industry to get this work done.”

In addition to his new appointment, White is currently the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Acting Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, where he oversees policies to govern the development and use of AI.
Prior to joining FMCSA, White first joined the Biden-Harris administration in 2021. He coordinated USDOT initiatives on emerging technology, including cross-developmental policies surrounding automated driving systems, surface vehicle-to-everything connectivity, and more. He also led the development of the Department’s Innovation Principles and helped launch the Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee.
Before he joined the administration, White also served as the Acting Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Policy and as Deputy Assistant Secretary in 2016, where he helped create USDOT’s Beyond Traffic plan.
