Makita releases three angle grinders

Dec. 21, 2020
The Paddle Switch Angle Grinders, Nos. GA4553R and GA5053R, feature non-removable guards.

Makita U.S.A., Inc., announced the compact industrial 4-1/2” by 5” angle grinders with non-removable guards, Nos. GA4553R and GA5053R. Compact grinders are widely used in commercial construction applications, and these grinders are an alternative to standard grinders.

“Grinder use in the compact industrial class has traditionally been driven by features like power and comfort,” said David Fernandez, product manager, concrete and metalworking products, Makita U.S.A. “But in recent years we’ve observed a demand for grinders with permanent affixed guards due to changes in how industries like energy, mining, and shipbuilding use our products in industrial environments. Makita has responded with a new feature: non-removable guards. This is a world’s first in the angle grinder category.”

The 4-1/2” and 4-1/2” by 5” Paddle Switch Angle Grinders with non-removable guards can be used in concrete/masonry and metal applications. The non-removable guard is permanently attached but can quickly be rotated for adjustment by the push of a lever. A cutting guard cover is available for any metal cutting applications.

Additional features include anti-restart protection and a tethering loop. Anti-restart protection is an electronic feature engineered to prevent accidental motor start-up in the event that the grinder is left in the on-power switch position after a power disruption. The tethering loop at the tail-end of the grinder provides a secure connection for attaching a lanyard while operating the grinder at heights or on a lift. This feature meets ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 standards, a voluntary requirement for tool tethering systems to transport and secure tools and equipment at various heights.

The angle grinders feature an 11-amp motor that delivers more output at 11,000 rpm. This new motor design delivers high levels of power for high-demand applications. For added durability, armature copper coils are epoxy-protected with a zig-zag pattern to protect against debris and to sufficiently dissipate heat to prevent overheating.

The ergonomics of the grinders have been redesigned. Large paddle switches provide multiple press points for power-start. The narrower barrel grip design allows for increased hand comfort while operating and reduced operator fatigue.

In addition to the GA4553R and GA5053R, another compact industrial angle grinder was launched, the 4-1/2” by 5” Paddle Switch Angle Grinder with AC/DC Switch (No. GA5052). It also features an 11-amp motor that delivers 11,000 rpm, as well as an integrated tethering loop and standard removable guard with quick push button adjustment.

All three grinders are designed for commercial applications including masonry, road and bridge construction, pre-cast manufacturing, roofing, metal fabrication, ship building, pipe fitting, commercial drywall, steel erectors, MEP contracting, and more.
