Tech Tip: How to spot and clean a dirty fuel injector
Sept. 26, 2017
Learn how to spot the symptoms of a dirty fuel injector and how to remove buildup on fuel injectors to keep them operating at peak efficiency.
Fuel injectors open and close in millionths of a second to spray a controlled dose of fuel. Impure fuel can produce byproducts that can build up and clog fuel injectors, making them less efficient. Symptoms of a clogged fuel injector include: difficulty starting, poor or rough idling, "check engine" light, increased fuel consumption, sluggish accelerations, engine knocking, lean misfiring, surging and bucking under different throttle loads, smoke coming out of the tail pipe or fuel odors within the vehicle.
A fuel injection cleaner can remove buildup on fuel injectors. Look for a fuel injector cleaner with a proven track record and a company that guarantees its products. To clean the fuel injectors, simply install the fuel injection cleaner into a full tank of fuel.
