The WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant offers lubrication and corrosion protection that won’t run, drip or make a mess. The gel-like formula is engineered with self-healing technology that softens to lubricate when there’s friction, and when the friction stops, it solidifies again to protect against rust and corrosion. WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel prevents rust for up to one year.
The review
Lou Fort, lead technician at K.A.R.S. Inc. in Huntingburg, Ind., says he uses several different types of lubricants almost daily, and very few stay where they’re sprayed without running or dripping. That was until he tried the WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant.
The WD-40 Specialist gel stuck onto all the surfaces Fort applied it to, including parking brake hardware, door and hood hinges and the cable and pivoting parts of a come-along. The gel also worked to protect and silence some suspension bushings.
WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel comes with a built-in flip up straw feature, which gives technicians the option to either spray with the straw up, allowing targeted application in tight or confined spaces, or flip the straw down, for a wider application.
"I was expecting there to be leakage at that spot, but didn't experience much at all," Fort says.
The different spray options on the nozzle take a second to switch, Fort says, but it ultimately saves time and is easier to use because there's no fumbling around with different spray heads.
"It is a great product that does just what it is supposed to do, and the built in dual spray head is one of the best things I have seen," Fort says.
The dual spray option is a big plus for Fort, and he thinks adding even another straw option could come in "handy." For example, the flexible straw, as seen on the WD-40 EZ-Reach, which allows bendability while keeping shape, could allow the WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Lubricant to reach other hard-to-reach spaces. He suggested WD-40 could possibly come out with the flexible straw currently found on the WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel, as an accessory to other WD-40 cans.
To set up the 10 oz spray can for use, it needs to be shaken for 30 to 60 seconds, according to Fort. The user should hear a ball inside rattle around mixing the gel formula.
The can comes with usage ideas, instructions for sprays options, standard precautions and a satisfaction guarantee. The Spray & Stay is also overfilled to ensure a full 10 oz of product is dispensed, according to the company label.
"I don’t have a single dislike of the WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant," Fort says.
