Q: How does oil analysis work?
A: Here are some of the basics of an oil analysis program for your fleet:
- Work with a reputable lab such as Polaris or Blackstone.
- Create a sampling plan for your fleet - don’t assume that all vehicles will perform the same way.
- Test different options including oil and filters combinations.
- Set target oil change intervals and pull samples at the specific intervals such as 5,000 and 10,000 miles.
- Don’t forget to test the vehicles at zero miles because this sets a baseline for the vehicles.
- Train your techs on how to pull the oil samples – sloppy work can lead to misreads, lost time and money.
- Work with your lab to understand your results and how they compare to their baselines.
