Ask the Expert: Are you currently using an Automotive A/C machine to diagnose an automotive A/C system?

May 28, 2020
With most newer vehicles running a variable displacement compressor and diagnosing by suction and discharge A/C pressures alone is probably not telling the whole story of what is happening in an A/C system.

Question: Are you currently using an automotive A/C machine to diagnose an automotive A/C system?

Answer:

If so, Yellow Jacket Automotive Mantooth Kit, No. 67007, may be a better alternative. With most newer vehicles running a variable displacement compressor and diagnosing by suction and discharge A/C pressures alone is probably not telling the whole story of what is happening in an A/C system. The 67007 Automotive Mantooth Kit, used in conjunction with the free Mantooth app for IOS or Android, allows you to read both suction and discharge pressures along with temperatures at two different locations. The app also shows the system enthalpy chart so you can actually see what is happening inside the A/C cycle which will help you diagnose whether the issue is in the charging cycle or if it’s in the HVAC venting system. The A/C system can be checked with a minimal loss of refrigerant as a result of the short 6” hoses used instead of the 8'-10' hoses used in an automotive A/C machine.
