Ask the Expert: Can I use any battery charger on newer style AGM and gel cell batteries?

Sept. 13, 2013
Traditional battery chargers may overcharge certain battery types.

Q: Can I use any battery charger on newer style AGM and gel cell batteries?

A: No. To properly charge AGM, spiral wound and gel cell batteries you must use a battery charger specifically designed to charge them. Traditional battery chargers will overcharge these types of batteries and cause the battery chemistry to deteriorate, reducing the useful life of the battery. Your charger should have specific settings for the newer battery types to ensure that they are charged according to their specific needs.
