Next month, Daimler Trucks North America will begin production of Freightliner M2106 trucks equipped with the new Detroit DD5 medium duty diesel. It is a 4-cylinder engine that offers a number of benefits over competitive engines, says Kary Schaefer, general manager of marketing and strategy, for Daimler Trucks North America.
The leading medium and heavy duty truck manufacturer in North America, it produces and markets Class 4 to 8 vehicles under the Freightliner, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses nameplates.
The DD5 is durable, with an expected B10 life of 400,000 miles.
Schaefer says Freightliner M2106 trucks equipped with the new engine also have some “driver friendly” features.
The DD5 will initially be offered in 2 ratings: 210 horsepower, 575 foot-pounds torque and 230 horsepower, 660 foot-pounds torque. Detroit plans to launch a larger displacement DD8 engine beginning in 2018.
