Q: Why is it necessary to use additives in diesel fuel?

A: Changes in the regulation and specifications of diesel fuel has led to highly hydrotreated fuels which decrease the amount of sulfur and aromatics which help lubricate injectors and fuel pumps. Additives are used to increase lubricity while maintaining the lower mandated levels of sulfur and aromatics. Tighter tolerances with HEUI and Common Rail Injectors necessitate increased cleaning and lubrication properties of the fuel to maintain longevity. Adding cetane will improve combustion and reduce carbon and engine wear. Diesel fuels are hygroscopic which means that they have the ability to attract and contain water which can corrode your fuel system. The ideal additive will address lubricity, cetane, water and cleaning.
