Toyota replacing Tundra engines after May recall

July 30, 2024
The company is replacing certain Tundra trucks with V35A engines, which may have been contaminated by machining debris. Teh replacement impacts roughly 98,568 engines.

Toyota dealers are replacing certain MY 2022 and 2023 Tundra truck engines in response to a May recall. The recall and replacement offer applies to roughly 98,568 Tundra trucks, whose owners will be able to replace their engines free of charge.

According to the original Safety Recall Report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the original recall related to certain trucks with V35A engines. For some of these engines produced during a particular period at certain plants, machining debris was not fully cleared from the engine, contaminating the engine assembly. These engines put pressure on the main bearings that allow the crankshaft to rotate within the engine assembly, and if they do so with machining debris on the bearings as the engine continues to operate, the bearings may fail.

Trucks with this defect may experience engine knocking, engine rough running, or engines that do not start or that stall. If the engine stalls while driving, this could lead to the loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

To remedy the issue, Toyota dealers are replacing the engines. Please note that this recall is for gas-powered engine models, not Tundras with Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. The company notified owners of this issue by late July and released an update with the engine remedy on July 25, 2024.
