The evolution of truck telematics: Q&A with ISAAC Instruments' Melanie Simard
As telematics technology continues to improve, and as dash cams become equipped to gather data on speed, acceleration, braking, and other driver behaviors, it's up to fleet managers to decide what to do with said data.
Recently, John Hitch, Fleet Maintenance Editor-in-Chief, was able to catch up with Melanie Simard, VP of safety, compliance and technical support at ISAAC Instruments. Their conversation covered everything from telematics data application to AI and the future of the technology.
Simard made it clear that in order to use truck telematics effectively, it isn't just about the data, discussing how a combination of dash cams and fleet coaching is necessary to "make drivers a better version of themselves," ultimately helping to predict and reduce downtime and vehicle wear and tear.

"It really helps as long as fleets are using that data and doing something with it, because if you have the data, you have to act on it," she said. "And we've seen a lot of improvement. We hear about our clients all the time, using those videos as coaching moments and improving those driver behaviors, making the road safer."
