AI is future of safety, Teletrac Navman survey finds

The company found that more fleets are considering AI-powered technology as tools to increase fleet safety, particularly for monitoring driver behavior on the road.
Teletrac Navman has released the findings of its AI & Driver Safety survey, which found that 83% of respondent fleets thought AI will play a large role in fleet safety in the future.
“The use of AI by fleets is expanding from, primarily, fleet planning to fleet operations,” said Alain Samaha, CEO, Teletrac Navman. “There are clear safety advantages in harnessing AI with vehicle and dashcam data including preventing accidents by reducing distracted driving, and our customers are turning to Teletrac Navman and TN360 as a partner in achieving these results.”
The survey reported that currently, 26% of fleets are already testing or piloting AI safety solutions, while 18% are exploring their technology options. As for where AI will be the most useful for fleets, Teletrac Navman’s survey found that 32% think AI will be useful in monitoring driver behavior, 17% thought AI could help predict and prevent potential accidents, and 16% think it will be able to help reduce distracted driving incidents.
As for AI’s application in the shop, 14% of fleet respondents thought that AI could improve fleet maintenance.
But the survey also found that fleets had some concerns regarding AI usage, too. The largest issue was data privacy, with 23% of fleets noting this as a concern, while 14% worried about resistance from drivers or staff.
Still, the survey also found that many fleets think AI will be best leveraged alongside human capabilities, as 47% of respondents said that human interaction is crucial for decision making and 37% said humans provide accountability and ethical oversight.
“Camera and telematic data, in combination with AI, have the potential to be a very powerful tool for fleets who need to cut their exposure to risk,” added Samaha. “However, people are integral to making that happen, especially in situations where there may be concerns from drivers and unions. Effective communication is key.”
