HERE launches AI mapping assistant to optimize routing

Jan. 8, 2025
The company’s investment in AI technologies and support systems yields an AI Assistant that optimizes routes based on cost and road conditions.

HERE Technologies made two big announcements for the trucking industry at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Amsterdam-based mapping technology provider unveiled the HERE AI Assistant to help fleets route trucks based on current needs and conditions, and also announced a 10-year, $1 billion cloud infrastructure agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide live streaming map and location services for auto OEMs to accelerate the development of electric, automated, and software-defined vehicles, the company said.

AI is HERE, there, and everywhere

The new AI Assistant uses Generative AI Large Language Models (LLMs) to offer location-aware guidance and specific route suggestions based on prompts, which can be tailored to fleets with electric and automated vehicle systems. This will allow fleets to optimize routes based on time and cost constraints while adapting to changing road conditions.

To capitalize on this, HERE AI Assistant is being integrated into HERE Navigation and HERE software development kit, which will also be available to transportation and logistics companies through the commercial vehicle version of the HERE WeGo Pro mobile app. The company says the app will launch in 2025.

"By integrating advanced natural language AI with HERE’s industry-leading mapping and location technology, the HERE AI Assistant transforms how users interact with vehicle navigation systems," said Denise Doyle, chief product officer of HERE Technologies. "This solution delivers personalized, real-time insights, enabling smarter route planning, enhanced safety features, and seamless adaptability to changing conditions."

Some of the AI Assistant’s key features include its ability to integrate into commercial vehicle systems through the HERE software development kit and its versatile suggestions based on prompts, driving habits, preferences, and real-time conditions. For example, a driver could ask to arrive home by a certain time or make stops within certain time increments. Additionally, the AI Assistant is designed to assist with electric vehicle (EV) routing as well, so that with the right prompts, drivers can find charge point locations and see their estimated availability. For instance, HERE Technologies says the assistant can respond to a prompt such as “calculate a route to Las Vegas and find a place to charge 50 miles before arrival with a coffee shop.”

Users will be able to provide real-time feedback to the HERE map utilized by the AI Assistant for greater accuracy, such as reporting temporary speed limit information, road closures, construction zones, and more.

In the future, HERE is looking to integrate topology and topography map layers to help support advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA).

HERE Technologies and AWS partnership

HERE and AWS noted that their new collaboration will give automakers cloud-native tools and technologies to help develop improved active safety features, infotainment systems, and location technology for navigation.

As an example, HERE said that it recently launched SceneXtract, which removes the need for manually searching, locating, and converting real-world environments into simulation-ready scenes used for testing and validating ADAS and AD system performance. Instead, by combining HERE HD Live Map with AWS’ natural language processing and generative AI, developers can now locate and export HERE HD Live Map data into scenes for testing, making it easier and cheaper to run such simulations.

“By fusing HERE’s industry-leading location intelligence with AWS's cloud capabilities and global reach, we're empowering automakers to rapidly evolve their vehicles into cutting-edge software platforms,” said Mike Nefkens, CEO at HERE. “Our work with AWS enables our customers to leverage our state-of-the-art location technology for faster software development and real-time data analytics throughout the entire SDV lifecycle, propelling the industry into a new era of automotive excellence.”

This collaboration also allows Amazon’s Location Service to use HERE’s mapping data and services to add geospatial data and location functionality to applications, “including dynamic and static maps, places search and geocodes, route planning, and device tracking and geofencing capabilities,” according to a press release. This will let users recommend routes, use geocoding to convert addresses into geographic coordinates and visa-versa, as well as monitor and track fleet assets.

Finally, the two companies’ Strategic Collaboration Agreement is designed to build and scale HERE's new transportation and logistics solutions. The agreement will pair HERE’s mapping content, location services, analytics, and AI/ML algorithms with AWS’ storage and database capabilities. Once created, these solutions will be available through AWS Marketplace.
