The Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition), a trade association for RNG, said that there are now 433 renewable natural gas facilities operational across North America, up from 300 facilities at this time last year.
“This is a significant milestone in the advancement of our mission and Sustainable Methane Abatement & Recycling Timeline (SMART),” RNG Coalition Founder and CEO Johannes Escudero said today. “We are proud of what our organization and industry have accomplished together, but we are focused on the next benchmark, and on even broader energy sector adoption of RNG as a critical component in our society's transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

The Coalition credited technological advancements and increased demand for low-carbon energy solutions for the recent surge and hopes to expand policy support to produce more facilities. Additionally, dairy farm-to-RNG projects have also supported this facility growth, such as California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard program, which incentivizes methane capture. According to the trade association, agricultural waste represents 24% of feedstocks deployed toward RNG production.
The association’s most recent goals are to complete 500 facilities by 2025, 1,000 by 2030, and 5,000 by 2040. 436 facilities are currently in planning or construction.
