The California Air Resources Board has certified Zonar as a provider of continuously connected remote on-board diagnostic testing devices necessary to clear trucks for the Clean Truck Check (CTC) program. Zonar’s V4 telematics control unit (TCU) can now clear trucks to operate in the state for the 2025 deadline.
“As the first certified telematics provider of OBD testing devices, Zonar is proud to provide a solution that will automatically perform emission checks while fleet vehicles are on route ensuring compliance, eliminating downtime and reducing costly logistical nightmares due to rerouting vehicles to testing centers for a required scan,” said Greg Colvin, senior director of Solutions Engineering at Zonar. “Our end-to-end solution will help drivers seamlessly adapt to the new mandate, save significant time and money, and ultimately make meaningful progress toward reduced carbon emissions.”

To be certified, Zonar had to provide emissions data as well as supporting information to the Board. But it can now offer its OBD device and over-the-air emissions monitoring to companies to meet CTC standards.
On-board diagnostic tools are one of two ways that vehicles can be certified for emissions compliance. For the first, a handheld shop tool must be plugged into an OBD port by a certified technician. The second, such as the V4 TCU, must be an OBD device installed into the vehicle which performs scans and sends the emissions data directly to CARB.
Beginning January 1, 2025, any commercial vehicle operating in or through California must undergo emissions testing twice per year to operate in the state. By 2027, vehicles will need to be tested four times per year.
