TravelCenters of America broke ground on the U.S.’ first publicly accessible medium- and heavy-duty truck charging stations at its TA Ontario, California travel center. The station is a pilot project with the California Energy Commission and will feature several chargers overall.
“This truck charging station is strategically located at the intersection of two of the nation’s busiest highway interstates and is a prime location to serve early-adopter electric truck fleet operators,” said Debi Boffa, TA CEO. “We are proud to take a leading role in bringing this infrastructure to our fleet customers and other professional drivers.”

The station will feature four 400 kW chargers which are meant to go live in early 2025, as well as one MW charger which will open in 2026. Together, the chargers will allow for fast charging for up to five trucks at once, the company stated. Additionally, the location of the TA Ontario station will let bp test the effectiveness of new technology such as megawatt charger systems, integrated microgrid power generation from canopy-mounted solar panels, and a battery energy storage system for up to one megawatt hour of power.
TA first began this project in 2021 by working on initial designs with the California Energy Commission and the Electric Power Research Institute. TA is also planning to develop charging projects at other Southern California locations, as well as considering developing other charging corridors in the U.S.
