Paccar brands Kenworth and Peterbilt have joined International, Mack, and Volvo in a massive recall caused by potentially faulty Bendix electronic control units manufactured between Sept. 2019 and Oct. 2024. The EC-80 is responsible for the recall of up to nearly 221,000 Paccar trucks configured to pull a trailer. The NHTSA recall number is 24V-915.
While experiencing a high level of electrical interference, or “noise”—and low PLC strength, the EC-80, may have trouble processing signals and set an ABS fault, stop operating, or malfunction. Along with the ABS, Automatic Traction Control, Electronic Roll Stability, Active Cruise Control, and Collision Mitigation systems may also experience faults. If the defect causes a fault during a stability event or automatic braking request, a crash may ensue.
The fix will require a software update to reprogram the ECU. The recall does not include EC-80 ECU ABS-only variants and non-towing applications of the ESC and ATC EC-80 ECUs, Bendix noted in a technical bulletin detailing the recall.
The estimated percentage with a defect is 1%, but that’s 7,000 trucks with the defect, considering the total size of the recall is estimated at around 700,000 vehicles recalled by Paccar, Volvo Group, and International.
