NHTSA recalls: Nikola, Tesla join Ford and GM on mid-November list

The latest safety notices feature missing warning labels, rear wheel lock-up, loss of drive power, and more.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently issued recall notices for commercial vehicles, including brands from Ford and General Motors.

Additional notices were issued for three electric truck manufacturers—Nikola Corporation, Rivian Automotive, and Tesla—for loss of drive power and deactivated exterior lighting, among other issues. 

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Ford models’ incorrectly installed engine cup plug may leak oil

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2024-2025 F-150 models equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine. The engines may have a misaligned engine cup plug, which can result in a rapid oil leak. This leak can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source, such as hot engine or exhaust components, can also increase the risk of a fire.

The recall also affects certain 2024 Expedition and 2024 Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

This recall potentially affects 2,418 vehicles. Dealers will inspect the engine cup plug alignment and replace the plug if necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 2. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S70.

Ford models’ missing dashboard airbag warning label

Ford is recalling certain 2018-2024 F-150 models due to an airbag warning label missing from the dashboard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." Without a label that shows the proper restraint usage guidelines, the occupants may have an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

This recall also affects certain 2020-2025 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, 2020-2024 Escape, Lincoln Corsair, 2018-2024 Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

This recall potentially affects 27,678 vehicles. Ford will mail owners the warning labels. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 16. Owners may call Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24C39.

Ford Ranger bracket may damage fuel line and cause leak

Ford is recalling certain 2024 Ranger vehicles. The fuel vapor line bracket may have insufficient clearance to the fuel vapor line, which can result in fuel vapor line damage that can lead to a fuel vapor leak. A fuel vapor leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

This recall potentially affects 65 vehicles. Dealers will inspect for a fuel vapor line bracket and install a tie strap to secure the fuel vapor line to the bracket. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 25. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S71.

GM models’ rear wheel lock-up from transmission valve failure

General Motors is recalling certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 models equipped with diesel engines. The transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up. Rear wheel lock-up can increase the risk of a crash.

This recall also affects certain 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles.

This recall potentially affects 461,839 vehicles. Dealers will install new transmission control module software. GM will provide a special coverage program to cover the repair of transmissions that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 9. GM vans’ incorrect software in transmission control module

General Motors is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles. Incorrect software in the transmission control module may result in harsh shifting, reduced power, unintended deceleration, rear wheel lockup, or cause the vehicle to move in an unintended direction. Rear wheel lock-up or moving in an unintended direction can increase the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 77,824 vehicles. Dealers will update the transmission control module software calibration. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 23. Owners may contact GM customer service at 888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N242471620.

Nikola Tre BEV instrument panel failure

Nikola Corporation is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tre BEV vehicles. A resistor may degrade, causing the instrument panel to fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 101, "Control and Displays." An instrument panel that fails to display critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, increases the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 72 vehicles. Dealers will replace the instrument panel. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 22. Owners may contact Nikola customer service at 630-808-4531. Nikola's number for this recall is 24VDC0903.

Rivian models’ deactivated exterior lighting

Rivian Automotive is recalling certain 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles. Software version 2024.39.30 may prevent certain exterior lights from turning on when the Car Costume feature is activated. Deactivated exterior lighting reduces the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 5,128 vehicles. Rivian has released an over-the-air software update. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 18. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 888-748-4261. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-1552.

Tesla Cybertruck inverter fault may cause loss of drive power

Tesla is recalling certain 2024 Cybertruck vehicles. A fault in the drive inverter may cause a loss of drive power to the wheels. A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 2,431 vehicles. Tesla service will replace the drive inverter, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 4. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-24-40-009.
