Recalls: Almost 190,000 Mack and Volvo trucks with bad ECUs

Nov. 8, 2024
The NHTSA’s latest safety notices also include certain Ford F-Series and Transit models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued recall notices for several commercial vehicles, including brands from Mack, VTNA, and Ford.

VTNA and Mack models with ECU malfunction

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain 2020-2025 Volvo VN, VAH, VHD, and VNRE models and Mack Trucks is recalling certain 2020-2025 Anthem, Granite, TerraPro, and Pinnacle vehicles, all equipped with Bendix EC80 ECUs. The NHTSA reports that these ECUs may incorrectly process certain signals, resulting in the EC80 potentially setting a fault, stopping operation, or malfunctioning. It is more likely to fail when towing multiple trailers, and "vehicles with low noise levels and high signal strength may never exhibit the vehicle effects."

In rare situations before the system faults or stops operating, the system may respond incorrectly to automated braking requests, increasing the likelihood of a crash.

The issue potentially affects 126,649 Volvo vehicles and 60,450 Mack vehicles.

Ford F-Series rearview camera malfunction

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, and F-450 vehicles.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a camera in the top of the tailgate, which is susceptible to water getting through at the interface between the camera and the Tailgate Park Assist Sensor Interface Module. This can result in a blue or black screen or loss of rear-camera display, increasing the risk of a crash while in reverse.

This recall potentially affects 24,950 vehicles. Ford's number for this recall is 24S66.

Ford Transit models’ rear wheel may lock up

Ford is also recalling certain 2023-2024 Ford Transit vehicles previously repaired under recall number 24V-102. Dealers may have installed incorrect rear axle shaft bolts on affected vehicles during said repairs, which may result in insufficient thread engagement or clamp load between the wheel and axle shaft. This can lead to rear wheel lock-up or possible separation of the wheel from the axle shaft, resulting in loss of vehicle control or motive power. The report also says that "in some cases, the vehicle may roll while in park if the parking brake is not applied. These conditions increase the risk of crash or injury."

This recall potentially affects 808 vehicles. Ford's number for this recall is 24S67.

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.
